River Ramble?

By TB

To gain a full understanding of just what Barb and I are embarking on, you have to go back to March 16th of 2013.  While Barb was visiting family in Indiana, I attended an all day (and night) SXSW tribute to Levon Helm at Auditorium Shores in Austin, TX.  Levon, who passed on April 19, 2012, was the drummer and regular lead vocalist for The Band.  Those of my generation know their songs…  Chest Fever, The Weight, Up on Cripple Creek, The Last Waltz and more.  Many artists performed that day in honor of Levon but at the end of the night, it was the Levon Helm Midnight Ramble Band that played, along with some very special guests including Carolyn Wonderland, JJ Grey, Steve Earle, Ivan Neville, The Mastersons and members of Spirit Family Reunion.  There was something very special in the air that night (wink wink) and an idea was hatched.

Levon would host a variety of artists at his studio in Woodstock NY to come together and share their music.  These concerts, modeled after old time traveling medicine and music shows, became known as Midnight Rambles.

The idea of a variety of musicians coming together, often in an impromptu way, to share their music “after hours” clicked….. but instead of musicians, what if it were fly fishing enthusiasts?  What if, like the old time traveling medicine and music shows, there was an opportunity to travel the country, to some of the best fly fishing spots, and have fly fishing “artists” share their stories.  Instead of a music ramble…..  a River Ramble, highlighting fly fishing, friends, food and fun.

Over the next two years, Barb and I will be driving the “SaraLinda”  to the top 100 trout steams in the US according to Trout Unlimited.  At each spot, we plan to host rambles with local fishing “characters”, catch any local music we possibly can, try out some local eats, sample some local brews ?, meet new friends, see old friends and most of all, have fun.
